I could be dead wrong, but the first thing that comes to mind are some of the really draconian exemptions, deductions, and credits within our plethora of tax expenditures. Could be missing the mark though, that’s why I’m asking.

If you mean those as places to increase revenue, I agree, but that was not my focus as that how to improve the income tax while I want to replace it.

But even keeping the income tax, for instance, we could substitute partial tax credits for deductions of mortgage interest and charitable deductions.

Among thousands, I don’t know, but the ones I mentioned are the most salient: EV and roof-top solar, ethanol (and biodiesel?) subsidies, farm price supports. But also it’s sort of not my job. Let the folks who want to reduce the deficit w/o increasing revenue come up with their list of 1.9 trillion of expenditure reductions.
